The Balaton Regional Plan and the birth of the Golden Shore
The history of Hotel Lidó is intertwined with the major state developments that shaped the image of Lake Balaton. The Balaton Regional Plan, which won the Abercrombie Award in 1965, aimed to transform the area around the lake into a modern, well-organized resort zone. The construction of Siófok's Golden Shore began in this spirit.
Hotel Lidó was built between 1962 and 1966 as part of a hotel row designed by Károly Polónyi and Endre Czigler, along with three other hotels. These buildings utilized the most modern technology of their time and played a pioneering role in the development of accommodation facilities around Lake Balaton. Architectural peculiarities of Hotel Lidó
In the history of Hotel Lidó, the building's design was remarkable from the very beginning. Built in a modernist style, the hotel has a reinforced concrete pillar-frame structure. According to the original plans, the hotel "stood on legs", which was a rarity at the time.
The floors with central corridors housed 23 double rooms. The Balaton, Lidó, and Hungária hotels, all with identical layouts, were capable of accommodating more than 800 guests in total. Discover our comfortable rooms, which still preserve the elegance of the Balaton lakeside today.
Art in the hotel
The history of Hotel Lidó would not be complete without the artworks found within it. Lounges opening from the stairwells featured mosaics inspired by Lake Balaton. The floors of the building were adorned with works by István Szabó, László Miskei, and József Baska.
István Szabó's composition on the 6th floor is particularly outstanding: it is characterized by vibrant colors, strong dynamics, and a unique atmosphere. The modern transformation of Hotel Lidó
In the 2000s, the hotels, including Hotel Lidó, came into private ownership. The history of Hotel Lidó entered a new chapter: while preserving the character of the 60s, but meeting today's demands, the building underwent modernization.
The new color scheme, modern thermal insulation, and contemporary balcony railings all contributed to the hotel retaining its original character while also considering the comfort of its guests.
Complete renovation between 2011 and 2019
The latest phase in the history of Hotel Lidó concluded with a multi-year renovation. By spring 2019, the complete interior design and technical reconstruction were finished. The replacement of room doors was the final step in this process. Maintenance and preservation of the building have been ongoing every year since then.
Today, Hotel Lidó is one of Siófok's most popular holiday destinations. It has retained its unique character, while also welcoming guests as a modern, family-friendly, and comfortable accommodation.
